The 2025 Mazda CX-5 is Mazda’s compact crossover SUV, a well-rounded option in a crowded segment. It competes mainly with the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Subaru Forester, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage, etc. Mazda is preparing to fully refresh the CX-5 with updated styling, more efficient tech, and improved features. However, the current-generation CX-5 remains one of Mazda’s most important models because it strikes a balance of comfort, usability, and a more premium feel than many of its rivals.

Driving Experience

Mazda has long been known for giving its crossovers a more engaging feel than many in the class, and the CX-5 keeps that up. The steering is precise and well-weighted: you get good feedback, and the car feels much more composed in corners than many rivals that feel mushy or floaty. If you like driving, the CX-5 tends to be more satisfying on twisty roads than SUVs that just prioritize comfort. The addition of Mi-Drive modes (e.g. Sport, Normal) helps you tune responsiveness.

The ride quality is generally good, especially on smooth roads. Mazda has done a decent job damping out road imperfections. However, harsher surfaces (cracks, gravel, expansion joints) will reveal some firmness, especially in trims with larger wheels or sport-oriented tires. If you spend a lot of time on rough country roads, the firmness might feel more noticeable. Still, inside the cabin, Mazda uses good materials and sound insulation, so wind/road noise is well controlled, though not absolutely silent.

With the base, non-turbo 2.5-L engine, acceleration is fine for everyday driving: merging, passing, daily use. It won’t make you feel sluggish, but it’s not sporty. However, the turbo version brings significantly more zip. It accelerates more quickly, offers greater torque (especially useful if you have passengers or cargo, or if you sometimes drive in mountainous or high altitude areas), and feels more ambitious. If your driving includes highway merges, overtaking, or you appreciate responsiveness, the turbo is worth considering. The trade-off is higher fuel consumption and more sensitivity to premium fuel for maximum performance.

Fuel Economy & Costs

Fuel economy is decent for this class, but not class-leading. As mentioned, base AWD gas versions are around ~9.3 L/100 km combined. City driving is more costly, highway less so. If you opt for the turbo engine, there is a notable drop in fuel economy, especially under heavy throttle. Also, larger wheels and more aggressive tires will worsen consumption a bit. For many people, the cost difference between base and turbo (and between standard vs premium fuel) will play out over years of ownership.

Interior, Comfort, & Tech

Mazda continues to punch above its segment here. The CX-5 interior feels upscale: good quality soft touch materials, solid fit and finish, premium trims have leather, optional wood or Abachi wood accents, ambient lighting, excellent seats (comfortable and supportive). The controls are well laid out. The 10.25-inch infotainment screen looks good. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto are standard.

Front seats offer good room and comfort. Rear seat space is usable for adults, but not generous as taller passengers might find headroom or legroom somewhat constrained, especially if the front seats are pushed back. Cargo volume is competitive, though not class-leading. Mazda gives you a flat load floor behind the rear seats and decent space once the seats are folded. It’s good for weekend gear, groceries, luggage, etc.

The CX-5 offers a strong mix of technology, even at the entry level. The standard infotainment setup features a 10.25-inch center display, which is crisp and well integrated into the dash. Unlike many competitors that rely fully on touchscreens, Mazda keeps its rotary controller system, which some drivers prefer for keeping eyes on the road. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across the lineup, along with Bluetooth connectivity and multiple USB-C charging ports. Voice recognition is included, and higher trims add wireless charging pads for smartphones.

Audio options range from a standard six-speaker setup to a premium Bose 10-speaker system available on GT and Signature trims. The Bose system is impressive, offering clear sound with strong bass that makes longer trips more enjoyable. Navigation is available on upper trims, and Mazda Connected Services allows remote access features through a smartphone app, including vehicle status, remote start, and locating the vehicle in a crowded lot.

Driver assistance technology is also well covered. Standard features include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Stepping up to higher trims adds a head-up display that projects speed, navigation directions, and safety alerts directly onto the windshield. A 360-degree camera system is also available, helping with tight parking or tricky maneuvers, and front and rear parking sensors add another layer of convenience.

The 2025 Mazda CX-5 remains one of the strongest choices in the compact SUV class for drivers seeking a balance of style, comfort, engaging dynamics, and everyday capability without stepping up to a larger, more expensive vehicle.

For Canadian buyers, especially those facing snow, icy roads, and the occasional light trail, the CX-5 stands out as a well-rounded option. Standard all-wheel drive, respectable ground clearance, solid build quality, and a refined cabin make it a practical companion in varied conditions. Features such as a quiet interior, quality materials, modern technology, and responsive steering enhance the daily driving experience.

There are trade-offs to consider. Competitors may offer more cargo space or slightly better fuel economy, but these gains usually come at the expense of driving enjoyment or cabin refinement. Mazda’s emphasis on handling precision and premium feel sets the CX-5 apart.

In terms of trims, the GS or GT with the 2.5L engine and all-wheel drive provide a strong balance of performance, comfort, and value for Canadian conditions. The turbocharged version delivers noticeably more power and towing strength, though at the cost of higher fuel consumption and a preference for premium fuel.

Overall, the 2025 CX-5 is a compact SUV that excels at delivering refinement and driving pleasure in a practical package, making it a standout choice in a highly competitive segment.
