Simplicity isn’t bad, and Volvo does it right with the C40. Its minimalist interior and exterior design are straightforward and practical. The C40 doesn’t care for attention but instead blends in. It delivers everything you need from an electric vehicle without drawing unnecessary attention. For many shoppers, that’s precisely what they want and the C40 delivers with a good range and built-in Google apps and services that make this vehicle easy to live with daily.

Performance & Range

The C40 doesn’t disappoint on the performance end, especially with the Twin Motor, which delivers 402 horsepower and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.7 seconds, according to Volvo’s official site. Despite its not-so-sporty appearance, this is a quick time, even faster than the Tesla Model Y long range. The C40 could be considered a “sleeper” in the automotive world as it doesn’t look fast but is surprisingly quick. When it comes to handling, its small size makes it enjoyable to push around in corners. And while it’s not exactly “sporty”, it’s an enjoyable daily driver.

The C40 offers two options: single motor and dual motor. While the dual motor may provide quicker acceleration, the single motor does well in terms of range. The single motor offers up to 478km on a single charge. However, it’s only available in rear-wheel drive (RWD), which may not be ideal in countries like Canada where there’s heavy snowfall. On the other hand, the dual motor comes with all-wheel drive (AWD) and offers a range of up to 414km. The difference between the two motors is approximately 64km. Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide if the extra range is worth sacrificing the AWD system.

Interior & Comfort

The interior design matches the simplicity of the exterior. Volvo’s interior emphasizes minimalism, and it’s executed well, something Tesla struggles with as they can look too plain. However, the C40 does it right with a good balance by not being overly simplistic or overly cluttered in its design approach. Despite the C40’s compact size, the cabin feels spacious with good head and legroom for the vehicle’s size. Visibility is also excellent from the front and sides, but the rear visibility is affected by the exterior design.

Volvo has a strong reputation for delivering comfortable rides, and the C40 lives up to that expectation. Despite its small size, it offers good ride quality, which is a challenge for some vehicles in this segment. The suspension does a good job of not being too harsh, ensuring a smooth and comfortable ride. The wool blend seats also add to the comfort by providing good support and adjustability.

Despite the absence of physical buttons for climate control, which can be inconvenient, the system does well at keeping the cabin comfortable. Volvo also offers an air purifier on the higher trims that blocks harmful particles, ensuring good air quality for all passengers. A cool addition in the infotainment is the monitor displaying particle and pollen levels outside the vehicle.

Technology

The C40 has good tech features, with a large 9-inch vertical touchscreen at the center. This screen serves as the central control hub for most vehicle settings and functions. While the infotainment user interface and experience may be somewhat disappointing, it’s less of an issue if you use Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Despite these drawbacks, the inclusion of apps like Google Assistant, Google Maps, and other apps from the Google Play store directly in the car is a definite plus, eliminating the need to connect your phone. The digital gauge cluster is also somewhat of a letdown as it lacks any customization options, offering only the ability to show or hide the map in the middle of the screen.

Sound systems are particularly important in electric vehicles, as they lack the typical engine noise. The C40 comes with a Harman Kardon Premium Sound system, delivering good sound quality. Powered by a 600W digital amplifier and featuring 13 hi-fi speakers, including an air-ventilated subwoofer, it provides an immersive sound experience.

In terms of safety, the C40 lives up to expectations, which isn’t surprising given Volvo’s reputation in this area. Volvo offers a lot of safety and driver assistance features, and ones like cruise control and lane keeping assist work well.
