The Chevrolet Silverado is a standout in the competitive truck segment, going head-to-head with American rivals like the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500, as well as Japanese competitors like the new Toyota Tundra. The ZR2, Chevrolet’s off-road version of the Silverado, excels by handling most off-road situations straight from the showroom floor while remaining a comfortable and practical daily driver. This balance of rugged capability and everyday ease makes the Silverado ZR2 an impressive option in its class.

The ZR2 can be equipped with either a 6.2L V8 engine or a 3.0L Turbo Diesel engine, with the diesel option being about $2,000 cheaper than the gas version. We tested the V8 engine, which does an excellent job powering this massive truck. It produces 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission that provides quick and smooth shifts. One of ZR2’s strengths is the V8 engine, unlike its overseas competitor, the Tundra TRD PRO, which we recently also tested. The Tundra uses a hybrid V6 engine and while it’s a great truck, the absence of a V8 engine is one of its shortcomings

Every ZR2 offers a lot to tackle the off-road terrain, starting with its 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory mud terrain tires. It also has a four-wheel-drive system with a two-speed transfer case and electronic-locking front and rear differentials. Unlike the regular Silverardo, the ZR2 has a specially tuned suspension that includes high-performance spool-valve dampers and multimatic DSSV shocks.
The truck’s underside is protected by a unique skid-plate package, and Chevy states that the ZR2’s high-mounted steel bumper provides a 31.8-degree approach angle, enhancing its off-road capability.

The Silverado ZR2’s cabin is an inviting blend of space and style. The dashboard looks great, featuring a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument panel beside a 13.4-inch infotainment touchscreen. Leather-trimmed seats and sporty dark accents enhance the high-end feel. The interior configuration is exclusive, with two-tone Jet Black and Graystone perforated leather, highlighted by yellow contrast stitching. The front bucket seats are comfortable and supportive, although they sit lower, which might affect visibility for shorter drivers. These seats include heating and ventilation but lack a massaging feature, surprising given the price. Physical buttons for controls ensure a user-friendly experience, with essential features like headlight and HVAC settings easily accessible. Numerous USB ports throughout the cabin ensure that all devices remain powered, regardless of your location in the truck.
The interior of the Silverado ZR2 is both practical and well-designed, featuring numerous storage cubbies for convenience. Large door pockets and a spacious center console provide ample storage, while hidden compartments in the rear seats add a unique touch of practicality.
The Silverado ZR2 seamlessly integrates modern technology with traditional controls, enhancing the overall utility and convenience. Its storage and charging capabilities contribute significantly to the truck’s functional appeal.

One of the shortcomings of the ZR2 equipped with the V8 engine is its fuel economy. The 420-hp V-8 engine is EPA-rated at 16.8 L/100 km in the city, 13.8 L/100 km on the highway, and 15.7 L/100 km combined. Although these figures are better than competitors like the Ram TRX and Ford Raptor, they are still not impressive. However, this is one of the trade-offs of opting for the V8 variant. If you’re willing to compromise on fuel efficiency, you’ll benefit from a more powerful and reliable 420-hp V8 engine.
The 2024 Chevy Silverado ZR2 exemplifies versatility with its impressive range of capabilities. It’s both a comfortable highway cruiser and one of the most off-road capable pickup trucks we’ve ever tested. The Silverado ZR2 shines not only as a daily driver but also as an off-road terrain explorer. The 2024 Chevy Silverado ZR2 is our #1 most versatile pickup truck of the year, beating the previous champion the Tundra TRD Pro.
